| “Visit Israel – You’ll Never Be The Same” … Ever since I first heard this slogan, I believed it, even though I had not yet been to Israel. But from the photos I’d seen and from the stories I’d heard from others who had visited Israel, I figured that a trip to the Holy Land would be a personally transforming experience – though I never realized just how transforming it would be until I finally had the opportunity to visit Israel for myself.
To say it was amazing … transforming … life-changing … well, it hardly begins to describe the feelings you experience on a trip to Israel! It’s hard for me even to put into words the experiences I had in Israel. We visited so many amazing places and were welcomed so warmly. Reflecting back on my time there, a few vivid memories immediately come to mind: I felt the gentle waves beneath me as I sailed on the Sea of Galilee – as in THE Sea of Galilee … the sea upon which Jesus once walked … the sea that he calmed in the midst of a storm! I also had the opportunity to walk in his footsteps at the Temple steps, and to pray a Psalm of Accent as he himself did when walking those same steps. And I felt the soft breeze on my face as I read the Sermon on the Mount at the location believed to be the place where Jesus first spoke that powerful message to thousands of people so many years ago. And, most of all, the Bible came alive for me like never before in Israel. All my life, I have heard stories about the places Jesus taught, where he performed miracles, where he lived and died. But now I can so clearly see these places in my mind as I read my Bible or listen to my pastor speak – and it is simply amazing! If I had to express in one word how I feel coming back from Israel, it’s BLESSED. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to visit Israel, to be truly transformed in my faith and in who I am. I know that I am forever changed as a result of this trip, and I really will never be the same.
